Irish Amateur Wrestling Association

The I.A.W.A was set up in 1947. However Wrestling in Ireland has been around much longer than that. Freestyle wrestling is a style of amateur wrestling that is practiced throughout the world and was one of the first sports competed for in the first Olympic Games.

A little about Freestyle Wrestling

IrishAmateurWrestlingAssociation
Freestyle Wrestling, often called Olympic Freestyle Wrestling!. Alot of people of today confuse Freestyle Wrestling and American TV Wrestling. There are two main differences, American TV wrestling is a TV SHOW and is rehearsed for entertainment on a stage, Freestyle Wrestling along with Greco-Roman Wrestling are both real. The out come is never pre-determined, only the fittest and most technical will win each time. Freestyle allows a much greater variety of holds than Greco-Roman. In Freestyle contestants may apply holds below the waist and may use their legs for all holds. If the shoulders of a contestant are forced to the mat simultaneously, however briefly, a fall is scored and the match ends. If no fall takes place, a winner is chosen on a point basis. Wrestlers may be penalized for passivity in a match. If there is a tie at the end of a match, the wrestler with more technical points will win. Freestyle wrestling has the same time limits as Greco-Roman. Freestyle and Greco-Roman Wrestling are among the toughest sports in the world both physically and mentally. They are also the only two styles of wrestling competed for in the Olympic Games.
